![]() The Ganges river dolphin was officially discovered in 1801. In murky water they emit a series of clicking noises, 30 to 80 per second, which they then use as sonar by listening for them to bounce off of potential prey. In addition, the boto is hunted along some parts of the Amazon River so that its meat can be used as fishing bait. 3,500-5,000 Scientific Name Platanista gangetica gangetica Weight 330-374 pounds Length 7-8.9 feet Habitats Freshwater rivers Dolphins are one of the oldest creatures in the world along with some species of turtles, crocodiles and sharks. ![]() Video recorded while conducting research on the soundscape of the Picaya-Samiria. However, both the boto and tucuxi face numerous challenges to their survival and population sustainability, including exposure to mercury and other pollutants from mining and industry, and habitat encroachment due to commercial and residential development. 49 subscribers 10K views 5 years ago A short recording of the underwater sounds made by the pink river dolphin. The IUCN classifies the tucuxi as “data deficient,” meaning the IUCN simply does not have sufficient information about the species to determine its population status (growing, declining, or stable) and whether it is a species of concern (either endangered or vulnerable). The issuance of these sounds is related to the time they return to the surface. The Indus River dolphin is 7 to 8.5 feet long and weighs 150 to 200 pounds. On the other hand, the tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis), is a smaller species of dolphin that looks similar to the bottlenose dolphin (think Flipper) that most of us are familiar with. Quick Facts Weight 150 to 200 pounds Length 7 to 8.5 feet Lifespan About 30 years Threats Chemical contaminants, Entanglement, Habitat degradation, Noise, Vessel strikes Region Foreign About the Species The Indus River dolphin, also known as the bhulan, is one of the world’s most endangered cetaceans. Like other dolphins, river dolphins use whistling tones to communicate. Their success can be attributed to their use of echolocation, a way to locate objects with the use of sound, particularly useful in an underwater environment. These mammals inhabit the region of the lower Tocantins River, produce 237 different sounds to communicate and are the third species of river dolphins. It even looks a bit prehistoric, with a long thin snout that it uses to forage in the naturally cluttered river. First published 31 March 2021 The toothed whales, or Odontocetes, are the most species rich mammal lineage. The boto is an odd creature, being pink but often with brownish spots along its body, and possibly represents the most ancient of dolphin species. The boto (Inia geoffrensis), also called the Amazon River dolphin, belongs to one of several families of river dolphin, all of which are considered either endangered or vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). I was in the Amazon to investigate ways that the National Marine Mammal Foundation (NMMF) could help protect the boto and tucuxi, two dolphin species that inhabit the fresh waters of the Amazon River.
